Quincy was stung by the sheer coldness in her gaze, a profound discomfort knotting in his chest. "What kind of look is that?"
Winona calmly set down her silverware, stood up, and pulled a napkin to slowly, methodically wipe her mouth. "I was planning to quietly finish this meal, but it looks like that's not going to happen. Claire, I'll see you in front of grandmother's headstone tomorrow morning. Enjoy your dinner. I'm leaving."
In the past, she had been unfailingly obedient within the Wynn household, especially toward Quincy.
To him, her absolute defiance right now was nothing short of rebellious treason!
Just as Quincy geared up to yell again, Claire shot him a vicious glare before desperately grabbing Winona's wrist. "Winona, you know how your father gets. Just pretend he's had too much to drink."
Winona found it entirely laughable. She glanced between Quincy and Charles Wynn.
Charles had always maintained a low profile in the family. His demeanor was one of constant, unyielding authority, and he didn't blatantly target Winona the way Quincy did. Yet, his subtle disdain was infinitely harder to swallow. Winona had always treated her grandparents with absolute devotion. As a teenager, she even took professional massage classes just so she could relieve the tension in the elders' shoulders—techniques she later used to try and please the old lady.
Her fingers would ache and cramp from the pressure, but she never complained once.
She used to foolishly believe her grandfather favored her. That was, until one day, she stopped outside his study and heard him talking to Sienna. "These imported fruits just arrived on a private flight this morning. They're still perfectly fresh. Hurry up and eat them, dear. Winona is always targeting you. If she comes back, you won't get a single bite."
"Thank you, Grandpa!" Sienna had cheered excitedly.
Winona already resented how Sienna seemed to be systematically stealing everything that mattered to her.
Hearing those words through the door felt like taking a brutal, stinging slap straight to the face.
She agonized over every interaction she had ever had with her grandfather. She had tried so incredibly hard, yet he effortlessly tossed all his affection to Sienna without a second thought.
