Winona felt violently dizzy from being shaken. She raised her hands to push Cynthia away, but the woman's hatred ran bone-deep, and she gripped the collar tight enough to cut off Winona's air.

Claire and Quincy Wynn arrived at that exact moment. Zachary getting into a car crash was massive news, especially since it happened on his way to finalize his divorce.

Seeing Winona, Claire started to step forward, but Cynthia's absolute fury pinned her to the spot.

Quincy pulled his wife gently into his arms, shooting Winona a razor-sharp glare.

The atmosphere in the corridor was thick with tension. The patriarch of the Shaw family tightened his grip on his cane and took a deep breath. "Track down that car."

This was obviously a hit orchestrated by an enemy.

But the police report came back almost immediately: the vehicle involved had been found burning in the suburbs. It had been driven with fake plates, and the driver was nowhere to be found.

"Keep digging! Find them!"

The grandfather's rage echoed down the hall, making the silence that followed even more suffocating.

The operating room doors finally swung open, and doctors wheeled Zachary out toward a private suite.

The crowd rushed the gurney, desperate for updates, leaving Winona completely ignored in the background.

She watched the lead surgeon wipe sweat from his brow and strip off his gloves, his expression grim. "Mr. Shaw's legs... he's going to be wheelchair-bound for the immediate future. As for his long-term recovery, we'll have to wait and see."

It was a polite, clinical way of announcing that Zachary Shaw's legs were likely permanently ruined.

Cynthia's eyes rolled back, and she collapsed to the floor in a dead faint.

The rest of the Shaw family stood frozen, the silence dropping over them like a shroud.

Winona stood near the doorway of his suite, knowing that if she walked inside right now, these people would literally tear her apart.

She backed out into the hallway and sat down quietly, the doctor's prognosis playing on a loop in her head.

Before leaving three years ago, she had fought viciously with Zachary.

Her overwhelming love had turned to ash, and in her darkest moments, she had even screamed at him to go die.
