If the airbags deployed now, she would be pinned to her seat. Once the car plunged fifty feet off the bridge into the freezing river, she would be trapped in a metal coffin.
The truck behind her was still accelerating. Refusing to wait for death, Winona let off the brake, slammed the gas pedal, and purposely swerved, crashing straight through the guardrail.
The second her car breached the barrier and went airborne, she kicked her door open and threw herself out into the open air.
A horrified crowd had already gathered on the bridge. The semi-truck skidded to a halt right at the torn edge of the guardrail, narrowly avoiding the drop.
Winona hit the icy water hard, the brutal impact nearly knocking her unconscious. The bridge above was illuminated by streetlights, but down here on the river surface, it was pitch black.
She could hear screams drifting down. "There's an accident! The driver went into the water!"
But from a fifty-foot drop, no one dared to jump in after her. All they could do was frantically dial 911.
Fighting through the agony, Winona forced herself to swim dozens of feet away from the crash zone to hide in the shadows.
But the trauma of the impact was catching up to her. Her mind spun wildly into chaos, and a suffocating wave of darkness swallowed her as the river pulled her under.
Her last thought before losing consciousness was a burning, furious realization: *I refuse to accept this.*
A suffocating wave of defiance washed over her heart.
The accident made the evening news almost immediately, though no one had identified the driver yet. High-profile crashes were daily occurrences in the city, so the public didn't pay it much mind.
Wesley forwarded the news broadcast straight to Sienna.
"Sisi, I did it. She's dead. Plunging fifty feet into the water after being hit by a truck? The airbags definitely deployed. There's zero chance she got out."
Sienna's eyes ignited with euphoric joy. She was still lying in her hospital bed; after being rushed in at noon, she had received twenty stitches across her scalp.
Cynthia had collapsed from the stress and was currently occupying the VIP suite right next door.
With both of them hospitalized, the Wynn and Shaw families were quickly notified.
