Sean gave a tight, bitter smile, finding the very air in the house suffocating. He turned toward the door and tossed over his shoulder, "I've already handed copies of the evidence to my colleagues. If you want to settle this privately with Winona, you'd better move fast. Because once she files criminal charges, not even God can save you."
Wesley touched his stinging cheek, thoroughly disgusted by his self-righteous older brother.
Victoria fretted over him, gently touching Wesley's cheek. "Your brother has worn that uniform for so long he's forgotten who he is. Imagine striking your own flesh and blood. Go negotiate with Winona. Offer her five million dollars to keep her mouth shut."
Wesley nodded, glancing at his phone. "Mom, I have to get to work."
Victoria patted his shoulder, her tone gentle. "Go on."
Wesley headed straight out and got into his car.
Arriving at the TV station, he figured the precinct would notify Winona soon enough. The moment he sat at his desk, he had someone summon her.
He maintained his arrogant posturing. He wouldn't demean himself by going to her; she had to report to his office like a good subordinate.
Winona was technically still under his command. Her shoulder had just been bandaged. As soon as she stepped inside, he barked, "Close the door."
Winona turned, clicked the door shut, and approached his desk with a flat tone. "Did you need something, Mr. Vance?"
Wesley felt a surge of rage just looking at her face. That aloof, holier-than-thou demeanor—who did this fake heiress think she was fooling?
He scoffed, tossing a check across the desk. "Five million dollars. Drop the entire issue. When the cops call, tell them you're refusing to press charges."
