Wesley had to pay the price.
Winona lowered her lashes, gently patting the woman's shoulder to comfort her.
It took another half hour before the woman, supported by her husband, finally managed to stand and walk away.
Winona tried to hail a cab to head home. Her injured shoulder was still throbbing.
A car pulled up right beside her. She glanced at the driver, who had a cap pulled low over his face, and frowned.
Instinctively, she turned and walked back toward the building. It was early evening, and there were plenty of people lingering around the station.
The driver didn't get out to follow her.
Winona walked all the way into the station's lobby, her eyes fixed on the car still idling by the curb.
Perhaps it was a sixth sense for danger, but every alarm bell in her body was blaring.
Over the past few years abroad, operating under the alias Jaca, she had exposed far too many ugly truths. The bounty on her head remained notoriously high.
She had survived by keeping her guard up, treating even the slightest suspicion as a life-or-death threat.
She had learned from her mistakes. There was no way she was going to die here.
The sharp click of heels approached from behind. Grace Montgomery hadn't expected to run into Winona in the lobby, and she visibly flinched, her face paling.
After everything that had happened, Grace had entirely lost her appetite for ruining Winona. Now, she just found the woman utterly terrifying—so terrifying she didn't even dare meet her eyes.
Her heart was pounding frantically, but her obvious fear only made her feel profoundly humiliated.
Taking a deep breath, she forced herself to stride over and stop right beside Winona. "Don't think you've won. Wesley has the Lockwood family backing him. He's never going to see the inside of a cell."
Her gaze dropped to Winona's injured shoulder, a flicker of smugness crossing her features.
Winona looked up. Even though she was the one sitting down, Grace couldn't shake the feeling that Winona was towering over her.
