Since she came back, Winona had never once brought up the baby in front of him.
That wound would never heal.
But she had to keep up this facade of absolute indifference.
She took a sip of water just as he spoke. "Stay away from Sean."
He actually knew she had been on the phone with Sean.
"Why?"
"His other identity will bring trouble to the Shaw Family."
Not trouble to her. Trouble to the Shaw Family.
They were technically still married, so this was his way of reminding her to watch her behavior as his wife.
Winona thought about it seriously and began to put the pieces together.
The first time she met Sean, she knew he couldn't just be an ordinary precinct captain. He had grown up in the military; making him a precinct captain was a massive waste of his skills. The title was clearly a cover for his real job.
Whatever that job was, it definitely involved classified operations.
And anyone involved in classified operations was heavily monitored. If Winona hovered around him too much, she would either draw the attention of the authorities or the dangerous organizations Sean was investigating. Either way, it was a massive, lethal problem.
She had guessed as much when she realized how brutally he operated.
Zachary's warning just confirmed her suspicions.
She nodded, forcing a polite smile. "Got it. Thanks for the warning, Zachary."
Her tone was flawlessly calm, completely burying whatever emotions had just threatened to surface.
Sometimes, Zachary wondered if the girl who used to cry so easily was just a figment of his imagination.
