Pearl had informed the Jordans about Gigi's death, but Ezra showed little interest in her and accepted the news nonchalantly.

The man, realizing that his attempts to please Pearl had fallen flat, obediently followed her orders and left.

Pearl heard his comment and turned to him with an evil smile. "Say that again, and I'll kick you out of the car."

Hugo never expected his hostage to turn the tables and challenge him. "Fine, fine. I won't say anything else," he conceded in a lazy tone. He felt oddly content despite being bullied.

Pearl couldn't fathom what was going through Hugo's mind. She was preoccupied with thoughts of how she would deal with him when they reached Mernaut. Would she play along as his fiancee and later marry him?
