Pearl had a feeling Hugo would try to lure her in with something, but she wasn't ready to just say yes. "If it's that interesting, why not just tell me now?"

"You don't believe me? I promised you that things would always be interesting."

Memories of their time abroad and thoughts of her mother darkened Pearl's mood. "Enough. I don't see anything worth discussing with you."

But Hugo wasn't about to let her off the hook that easily. Right before she could end the call, he said, "I know the truth about your origins."

Pearl froze. Wasn't her family's background obvious? Or was there something she didn't know?

"Try a better story if you want to meet," she retorted.

"If you think I'm lying, that's your loss. I guess I'll keep what I know to myself," Hugo said, feigning disappointment.

"What time?"

Hugo smiled. He had her attention now. "Tomorrow at 6 pm, room 321 in the International Trade Tower. I'll have a seat ready for you."

Hugo made it clear— a single seat, not plural. She was the only one invited.

Pearl realized she needed to be wary of his games.

"Oh, by the way, don't tell Richard about this. I don't want to see him for now."

She wanted to object, but Hugo added, "Of course, it's up to you to tell him or not, but this might affect how things turn out."

Hugo wasn't expecting to hear that. "Why do you hate him to the point of ruining his career?"

"I don’t hate him. I just don't want him mixed up in this."

Hugo sounded annoyed. "Why? Are you two close? Why are you so protective of him?"

"It's not about being close. I just suspect he's up to no good and shouldn't be involved."

Hugo scoffed. "I don't think he's interested in you like that."

"Whatever. Do you accept this condition or not?" Pearl asked.
