Winona Wynn and Zachary Shaw novel CHAPTER 46 by Jade Emerson read online

Neither of them brought up the past. It was like a festering wound—tugging at the bandages would only expose the gruesome, unbearable history rotting beneath.

Since they were getting a divorce anyway, there was no point in tallying up old scores. It was impossible to calculate who owed who more at this point.

Zachary lowered his head and quietly ate his pasta. Every movement he made was graceful and pleasing to the eye.

Honestly, putting aside the fact that he didn't love her, Zachary was undeniably a remarkable man.

Winona lifted her foot to head upstairs, but his voice stopped her. "Winona, could you get me some water?"

The way he breathed her name left the entire room cloaked in silence for several seconds.

For a brief, dizzying moment, Winona felt like he wasn't talking to her at all.

The elders always called her Winnie, but Zachary was the only one who called her Winona with that exact, intimate inflection from the very beginning.

It was the same way he used to whisper her name in bed.

The familiar cadence felt almost suffocatingly close.

Perhaps it was just a lingering habit he couldn't shake off.

Stunned for a moment, Winona finally snapped back to reality. "Sure."

They were both being painstakingly polite. As the saying goes, you don't hit a smiling face.

Hidden beneath all this courtesy, neither of them had to be the first to shatter the peace and start a fight.

She turned back to the kitchen and poured him a glass of water.

"Thank you."

The doorbell rang just then. Winona went to answer it and found two of the villa's bodyguards standing outside. One of them had a backpack and carried a cat carrier.

The other held an assortment of pet supplies.

"Mrs. Shaw, Logan sent us over with the cat."

Winona's eyes lit up, and she eagerly took the carrier from him.

The Ragdoll cat, named Bluebell, was nearly six years old. She was a wedding gift from her grandmother.

Winona had left in such a rush three years ago that she hadn't taken the cat with her, a decision she regretted endlessly.

But living abroad meant constantly moving, and she simply couldn't have provided the cat with a stable life.
