Winona glanced around the room. Through the window, she saw lush, quiet greenery. There wasn't a building in sight.
"Where am I?"
"My clinic. It's been out here for years. Only my regulars bother coming all the way out here now. Does your head hurt? If it's a severe concussion, I'll need to keep you for observation for a few days."
She felt significantly better. The nauseating dizziness was gone.
"Who brought me here?"
The old doctor slipped his glasses back onto the bridge of his nose. "K. I assumed you two were friends. I've never seen him bring anyone around before."
Winona was surprised the old doctor knew K existed. Her lips curled into a faint smile. "What does he look like?"
The doctor waved his hand dismissively, clearly uninterested in gossip. "God knows. If you're feeling fine, you can go home. I only have this one bed, and someone called saying they're coming in this afternoon."
Winona was stable enough to walk, so she quickly slid out of bed. "How much do I owe you?"
"Already paid. Grab your phone, it's under your pillow."
Winona lifted the pillow and found her phone safely tucked away.
She thanked the doctor and walked outside, but the clinic was entirely isolated in the suburbs. She couldn't even hail a cab on an app.
Left with no choice, she dialed Natalie King.
Natalie arrived two hours later, looking utterly bewildered. "What the hell are you doing out in the middle of nowhere?"
It was a two-hour drive from the city center, and the area was completely desolate.
Winona quickly recounted the accident. Her eyes were stone-cold. "I need to go back and investigate."
