An hour later, Winona walked into the police station.
As she stepped out of the car, Natalie grabbed her arm, looking anxious. "Are you absolutely sure you don't need me to come in with you?"
Winona patted the back of her hand reassuringly. "I know you're drowning in work. I only called you because I was stranded in the middle of nowhere. Go back to your firm. Your phone has rung twenty times since you picked me up."
Natalie had literally abandoned a client mid-meeting to rush out and get her. She knew Winona's personality perfectly—if she had any other choice, she never would have asked for help.
She let out a breath of relief. "Alright, I'm heading back. Call me the second you need anything."
Winona nodded, turned, and calmly walked into the precinct.
The captain assigned to the case was Sean Vance.
When Sean saw her, he immediately escorted her to the interrogation room where the driver was being held.
The moment the driver laid eyes on her, a violent tremor of shock ripped through his gaze. He was stunned she was still breathing.
Winona caught the micro-expression instantly, and so did Sean. The driver wasn't relieved she had survived; he was terrified she hadn't died.
It was exactly as Winona predicted—a contract killing.
Winona didn't bother speaking to the man. She had only entered the room to read his reaction.
She turned and walked back into the main lobby, looking at Sean. "Have you pulled his bank records? Or his immediate family's? Look for any massive, recent cash deposits."
Sean was genuinely impressed by her icy composure so soon after a near-death experience. "I've already got a team running the financials. We'll have answers shortly."
"Thank you. Please keep me updated."
She left the rest of the investigation to the police. They were the professionals.
