The next morning, Winona grabbed a quick breakfast and saw the familiar car waiting outside.

She opened the door, surprised to see Zachary already inside. "Does your leg really not need rest at home?"

Zachary kept his eyes closed, his tone flat. "Work is more important."

Winona climbed in, seamlessly shifting the topic. "Since you're able to go out, should we swing by City Hall today? I can take the day off."

Even though it sounded a bit callous, he and Sienna were already at that stage. Winona refused to let anyone accuse her of dragging out the divorce.

She wasn't about to take the blame for that.

The car fell entirely silent, so quiet you could almost smell the gunpowder in the air.

After a long pause, he finally spoke. "If you're taking the day off, you can come with me to the hospital to get my bandages changed."

So he was going out for a hospital appointment?

Winona felt a sudden wave of awkwardness and forced a tight smile. "I need to use my time off carefully. I just parachuted into the interview department. If I start calling out right away, it'll leave a bad impression."

In short: Not happening.

Zachary leaned back against the seat. "Since I injured my leg, you haven't asked about it once."

His tone was deceptively calm, but every word practically screamed that she was cold-blooded.

Winona stayed quiet. Deep down, he must resent her, just as she had resented him.

But given his nature, he wasn't going to pull out a knife and stab her. In public, he was always perfectly restrained and composed.

She stared out the window, regretting even bringing up City Hall. If she had kept her mouth shut, she wouldn't be dealing with this right now.

Zachary didn't push the issue. Instead, he ordered coldly, "Drive."

In the front seat, Logan let out a quiet breath, his stiff fingers finally relaxing slightly. "Yes, Sir. Ma'am, buckle up. We'll drop you at the station first."

As the car merged onto the road, Zachary's phone buzzed.

He answered, his brow immediately furrowing. "I'm heading to the coastal project in person. I'll make sure they drop this ridiculous scheme."

Winona guessed "they" referred to the extended Shaw family.
